American Heart Association · Statistical report · Varies by topic; primarily 2019–2023
BlueRipple Assessment
The 2025 AHA Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update is the most current iteration of the field’s annual benchmark publication — the document that assembles, in one place, the surveillance data from NVSS, NHANES, BRFSS, and the Global Burden of Disease study into a comprehensive epidemiological picture. The 2025 edition incorporates approximately 3,000 new data sources compared to the prior year and adds enhanced global data with improved methodology. It is published in Circulation as a supplement exceeding 650 pages.
The scope is broad: Life’s Essential 8 health behaviors and health factors (smoking, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, metabolic syndrome), all major cardiovascular conditions (CHD, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, PAD, VTE, congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, SCA), and special topics including subclinical atherosclerosis, pregnancy complications, kidney disease, brain health, quality of care metrics, cardiovascular procedures, and economic costs.
New for 2025: a sustained focus on health equity across all domains, reflecting growing recognition that cardiovascular disparities by race, ethnicity, sex, socioeconomic status, and geography are as important to track as aggregate burden statistics. Regional supplements covering CVD burden in specific geographic and demographic contexts are included.
This edition’s data primarily cover 2019–2023, providing the most current available picture of post-pandemic cardiovascular trends — including the excess CVD mortality associated with COVID-19 and its aftermath.
We rate the evidence strong. The 2025 AHA Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics annual update is the definitive reference for current US and global cardiovascular epidemiology — the standard citation for cardiovascular burden statistics in research, policy, and clinical education.
